1. OSG Doubles Enrollment: What Does This Mean for Independent Schools?

Most independent school educators have heard that online education is experiencing exponential growth.  However, even though experts believe that more than 2 million high school students and 6 million college students will take online courses in 2011-2012, most independent schools have done little to engage with online education, thinking that online education has little relevance to their schools.

I think that the enrollment and engagement numbers that we are looking at with the Online School for Girls suggest that independent schools need to start to develop strategic approaches for thinking about how online education integrates with their school.

    Consider that:

    • 125 schools have enrolled their students or faculty in OSG courses, professional development, or summer courses
    • 2011-2012 OSG student enrollment is 208% of 2010-2011 student enrollment
    • On September 1, 2010 there were 26 schools in the OSG network; Today, there are 52 schools

It seems that exponential growth of online education is not limited to public schools or colleges.
